FAQs

What is a Graphics Tablet?

A Graphics Tablet is an input device which allows one to draw an image onto a computer and act as an input device, without having to utilize a mouse or keyboard. A graphics tablet consists of a flat tablet and a cordless, battery-free Pen allowing you to use it freely and intuitively. The smooth flow of a graphics tablet can be refreshing for those who find the mouse to be a jerky input device.

How Do Wacom Tablets Work?

Wacom Tablets take advantage of the electro-magnetic resonance technology developed by Wacom Co. Ltd. Japan, in which radio waves are sent to the stylus and returned for pen pressure and position analysis. It is the pen, not the tablet that determines which position and what pen pressure is registered. This means you can rest your hand on the tablet, and even put a sheet of paper or photograph on the tablet surface and trace it.

What Can Be Done With A Tablet?

Besides being able to replace a mouse, Graphics tablets can be used in various purposes. Below are a few examples:

• Photo Editing. With a tablet, it's much easier to edit and correct digital/scanned photos.

• Freehand drawing on the computer. With a mouse it can be frustrating and can cause RSI, but a tablet makes it much more enjoyable.

• CAD and 3D modelling.

• Handwriting recognition.

All of the above can be done using a Graphics Tablet, making the experience less time consuming and much more enjoyable.

Why Are There Different Size Tablets?

Whether the tablet size is big or small, you can do the same basic things with it: drawing, controlling the cursor on the screen, etc. The difference comes with the accuracy with which you, as a human, can move the cursor. Under normal settings, the tablet's active area corresponds 1 to 1 to the monitor screen. So, when the tablet size is small, a small pen displacement on the tablet will be large on the screen. In order to make small and accurate movements on the screen, your hand will have to make incredibly small and extremely accurate movements on the tablet. The tablet will be able to cope with these small movements, but you will not. Therefore, if you need to work very precisely on the screen, you need a bigger tablet.

What is The Advantage of Using a Pen?

Mouse-

A normal mouse is moved with what is scientifically known as coarse or proximal movement. These movements are made from the shoulder or the elbow. A characteristic of these movements is that they are not terribly precise. In order to be able work accurately, the muscles are tensed, so that the arm can be held rigid to control the mouse. This constant muscle tension frequently causes injuries such as RSI

Pen-

The same type of movements can be made with a pen. An advantage of pen is, however, that the hand has a more neutral posture. With a mouse, the hand must be rotated at the wrist, whereas this does not happen with a pen, thus preventing extra tension on the muscles and tendons in the forearm. If only coarse or proximal movement were possible with a pen, then many people would develop complaints like RSI by using a pen. A pen can, however, also be moved in another manner

RSI

What is RSI?

Repetitive strain injury (RSI) describes a painful condition generally associated with doing a particular activity repeatedly or for long periods of time. It often occurs as a result of working with computers. Doing constant repetitive movements such as typing on a keyboard or using a mouse for long periods of time can cause RSI.

How Can A Graphics Tablet Help?

Due to the mechanical or optical components, a Mouse can be hard to control when moving the cursor precisely as it is not responsive or accurate enough to do this. This mismatch between an inaccurate device aiming for a precise target stresses the arm and shoulder muscles which can cause Repetitive strain injury (RSI).

With a Wacom tablet, however, you have a precision device. Sufferers from RSI who can no longer manage with a mouse can therefore benefit from a Wacom tablet and pen. Although a Wacom Tablet cannot cure RSI, it will help reduce the stress on the arm and shoulder.
